some things I’ve loved
🌀 The Viral Spiral by John Herman, on the ever-growing pressure on people to be a brand.
🔮 How to Future by Kevin Kelly, on the three things a good futurist focuses on: past, present and future.
🥬 I read Coming to my Senses by Alice Waters. I’ve always been interested in the mythology surrounding Waters, and Chez Panisse in particular, and while I enjoyed learning about her discovery of French food and her roots in counter-culture, the book did feel a little bit pretentious and out of touch. Still dying to eat at CP though!
✈️ I watched Top Gun: Maverick and really enjoyed it. It’s definitely an upgrade from it’s very aged and cringey older sibling, Top Gun, but I’m not going to lie to you and say it had a great plot. I watched it for the planes and Jay Ellis and was pleased with what I got. I also saw Jurassic World and emphatically do not recommend it.
🔥 I also read Las Cosas que Perdimos en el Fuego by Mariana Enriquez for my book club. It is a collection of short stories and some of them are deeply disturbing. My favorites were La Hostería and Tela de Araña.
🏌🏻♀️ I listened to this Freakonomics podcast on sportswashing, defined by Amnesty International as “the use of sports by oppressive governments to legitimize their regimes and distract from their human rights abuses.” While 2022 has been a year rife with this practice (Winter Games and World Cup) the episode focuses primarily on golf and the current war between the PGA Tour and some of its star players, who defected to join the higher-paying, less-demanding Saudi-backed LIV Tour.
